Suborder: Platyrrhini | Superfamily: Ceboidea | Family: Cebidae | Subfamily: Cebinae

Members of the Cebinae subfamily, capuchins and squirrel monkeys, are familiar to many people because they were often, and still sometimes are, sold as pets or trained to entertain people. Their intelligence and manipulative ability enable them to forage for hidden insects and dispersed fruits and nuts, but unfortunately also made them prime victims for those who trained them as "organ grinder monkeys," trained to dance and collect money for organ grinders. Squirrel monkeys and capuchins are both arboreal? and diurnal?, but will sometimes descend to the ground for travel or in search of food. There are reports of a captive capuchin using objects to crack open nuts.
