Hominoidea Superfamily

 

The Hominoidea superfamily, which is part of the Catarrhini infraorder, are collectively known as apes. This is the family to which humans belong along with the other great apes, chimpanzees, gorillas, and orangutans, and the lesser apes, gibbons. Apes are characterized by their lack of tail and tendency towards upright posture. Because of their relatively large body size, apes hang below branches instead of balancing on top of them as do most primates. Relative to their body size, apes have very large brains.
