The Responsive Care Manual presents a philosophy for hand-rearing orphan chimpanzees in zoos and sanctuaries or chimpanzee infants abandoned by their mothers. It stresses the importance of an orphan chimpanzees growing up with members of their peer group and being increasingly introduced to other members of the zoo social group. The need for responsive care is to prevent an orphan chimpanzee from adopting human behaviors and identifying with their human surrogate parent.
