The "Tool Maker"


Objective:

Using a simulated exercise, students examine chimpanzee tool use. Students learn through experience how chimpanzees obtain one of their favorite delicacies, termites by making and using tools.


Materials:

1. one 6 oz. paper cup and lid (with hole) for each student.

2. one straw for each student

3. electric hot plate

4. one cooking pan and spoon

5. one bag of rice


Procedure:

1. Prepare rice (overly cooked) before the activity

2. Put a portion of rice in each cup.

3. Place the lid on the cup.

4. Students attempt to get the rice out of the up by manipulating and/or modifying the straw to remove the rice from the cup.
